A Reputation Built By Success

Which driving habits can you adopt to prevent truck accidents?

Roads in Ohio carry constant commercial traffic, especially on highways such as the I-70, I-71, I-270 or Route 33. Large trucks have the potential to be significantly more dangerous than passenger cars because they are heavy, take up a lot of space and have more blind spots. With this in mind, it is important to avoid treating them the same way you would any other vehicle. Keep these driving habits in mind to reduce the risk of getting in a truck accident.

Do not linger near a truck’s blind spot

Truck drivers have significant blind spots directly in front of them and behind. They also have blind spots along both sides of the truck. Lingering in these blind spots may be dangerous, as trucks may swerve into you and there may not be enough time or space for their drivers to react.

Be mindful when merging or changing lanes

In Ohio law, you must give the appropriate signal whenever you change lanes and you must always do so safely. Neglecting to do so is not only against the law, courtesy of the Ohio Revised Code Section 4511.39, but it can also be dangerous because truck drivers who have to brake abruptly – especially on wet roads – may jackknife or rear-end other vehicles. The state also prohibits drivers from following too closely. When driving near trucks, it is important to keep a reasonable and prudent following distance because larger vehicles need longer stopping distances.

Watch out for rain

Rain is not uncommon in Ohio, which means it is important to pay attention to weather forecasts to help you anticipate wet roads. If it rains, slow down to avoid hydroplaning as wet roads and tires reduce traction, making vehicles more likely to skid out of control. These driving conditions also make trucks significantly more dangerous when the roads are wet.

Staying safe when trucks are on the road

In Ohio, safe driving around trucks comes down to being visible, giving drivers enough space and being cautious when it rains. By adjusting your driving habits and following the state’s laws regarding lane changes and following distance, you can reduce the odds of getting into a truck accident.
